Digital Janitor

About Digital Janitor

Digital Janitor is a program that helps you sorting your folders. Imagine downloading a lot of documents, pictures and photos every day, in the end your "Downloads" folder will be full of files that you will have to cut/paste by yourself into their proper directory. Digital Janitor sorts the folder depending on where the user wants a certain filetype to go, freeing your time.

Also, you might have a lot of music, unsorted in one single folder. Digital Janitor 3 can now sort your music by Artist and Album, so you don't have to search through tons of MP3's to find your song.

How to use Digital Janitor 3

Regular file sort

Let's assume you have folder with 3 text files and 2 images. The number is not important because Digital Janitor will sort them no matter how many they are. What we want to do is place the text files in "My Documents" and the images in "My Images". To do that, specify in the first line the directory you want to sort:

Press "Browse" and select the folder you want to sort. Note that you can open that certain folder by pressing "Open Folder" (available only in version 3.1 or higher).

Next, specify the way you want your files to be sorted. Since we want text files to end up in "My Documents", select the "Extension" button, and specify the "txt" file extension. Then, specify the place you want this filetype to go by pressing the second "Browse" button and selecting a folder. In this case I selected "My Documents" folder.

After this, press "Add Rule" and you will see a new rule added into the list. ".txt" files will go to "My Documents" folder (or the folder you specified earlier).

Also, add a new rule to sort "jpg" images to "My Pictures" by selecting the "jpg" extension and the "My Pictures" folder as destination. To sort the folder based on this rules, press the "Auto-Sort" button to sort your folder.

MP3 sort

Digital Janitor 3 can also sort your MP3 files based on their artist/album information.
Digital Janitor can sort your MP3's in subfolders by artist and album, for example, a song made by "John", in an album called "Yesterday" would be sorted to: Destination Folder\John\Yesterday\Song.mp3.

In the main window, click on the "Sort MP3's" menu item. In the window that appeared, specify the folder with the MP3's you want to sort:

Also, specify the place where you want the sorted MP3's to be placed (make sure it is not the same folder unless you check "Sort by Artist" or "Sort by Album" or both).

In the end, check the rules you want to sort the MP3's by. If you just want all MP3's made by a singer/band to go in a folder with the singer/band's name, check "Sort by Artist", if you want, you can even sort it in sub-folders by albums by checking "Sort by Album".

In the end, press "Auto-Sort" to sort your MP3's.
